Development Engineer (On-Board Data Handling Hardware)

Key Tasks and Responsibilities              

As part of the team, you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Support with the "Electrical Systems Engineering - On-Board Data Acquisition and-processing (OBDH)" work package for spacecraft and supplies of the associated elements (hardware, firmware, models, documentation);
  • Contact person for the OBDH topics in the project team, regarding the customer and the suppliers;
  • Cooperation with suppliers for electronic assemblies and subsystems such as data acquisition, mass storage, central computer, instrumentation and payload computers, remote terminals, and interface units, as well as responsibility for quality, on-time delivery, and delivery cost within budget;
  • Support / execution of early feasibility and demonstration studies (phase 0, A, B1) for spacecraft or instruments;
  • Member of the electrical team in the development, manufacturing, qualification and final acceptance of payloads, equipment, instruments, and complete satellites (project phases B2, C, D, E);
  • Collaboration in the analysis of Customer and System requirements in the electrical team, and derivation of the functional chains and electrical subsystem requirements for data acquisition, transmission, and processing;
  • Hardware-related implementation, verification, and validation of algorithms (e.g., in FPGA's) in close coordination with algorithmists, software, instrumentation and application developers;
  • Collaboration in the definition and coordination of components and interfaces (computer, mass storage, digital / analogue data acquisition, data bus(es), protocols) at platform level and / or for or for instruments, equipment, payloads in the engineering team;
  • Technical coordination with suppliers (e.g., adjustments to the computer, data acquisition, interfaces, etc.);
  • Support in the approval of Design and Production releases, as well as tests on supplier level (co-engineering if required);
  • Coordinate relevant integration, testing and operational activities at system level;
  • Contribute to related internal/external R&D and improvement/standardisation initiatives.

Skills & Experience

You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience:

  • Bachelor´s degree in Physics, Electronics or Aerospace Engineering (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline;
  • Good communication skills to ensure flow of information;
  • Ability to integrate into a team;
  • High level of responsibility, ability to work under pressure and organisational skills;
  • Willingness to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Fluency in English and German is mandatory; knowledge of another European language is an advantage.

Additionally, the following skills are considered an asset;

  • Proven Development experience in one or more of the following disciplines:
    • On-board data acquisition and signal processing (analogue / digital), front-end electronics;
    • Data processing hardware (processor technology, digital controllers, embedded systems, systems on a chip);
    • Firmware & hardware-related software implementation, algorithm implementation;
    • FPGA programming or ASIC development;
    • Data transmission (wired and wireless bus systems, data protocols, optical interfaces / networks are a plus);
    • Data security (cryptography, hardware encryption).
  • Ability to coordinate work packages, subcontractors and small teams.
